Wire EDM
As with any CNC turning process, there are a number of parameters that influence machining quality. These parameters are automatically calculated and applied by the machines according to the expected surface quality and accuracy.
During wire electrical discharge machining (EDM), the material is ‘cut’ with a special wire, which also acts as an electrical conductor. In this process, tiny, controlled electrical discharges are used to melt and then ‘explode’ particles of material from the work piece. This occurs in a poorly conductive medium/dielectric material, meaning that the current only causes a discharge, i.e. a spark, when it comes into direct contact with the work piece. What makes wire electrical discharge machining so special is that it produces the finest and most accurate surface finish. When it comes to precision, we can guarantee up to 1 micron accuracy on our premium-quality Sodick wire electrical discharge machines for the production of custom parts.
With wire EDM, we can also meet special geometric requirements using 5-axis or 8-axis wire electrical discharge machines and CAD/CAM systems.
